“History Pays” Historic Preservation Workshop Offered in Nearby Drake Neighborhood
A free seminar called “History Pays: Increase the Value of Your Home with Historic Preservation” will be offered
10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Sept. 30th.
At the seminar,participants will learn how to increase the value of their home, and save money in the process, using techniques of historic preservation. Experts on real estate and historic preservation will share real-life stories of home restoration in the Drake and Sherman Hill Neighborhoods.
Topics include an overview of restoration and preservation; why and how to save original wood windows and wood siding; and real-estate trends including the high
demand for restored older houses.
This free event coincides with the quarterly meeting of the Drake Neighborhood Association, and continues the yearlong celebration of the 125th anniversary of the
founding of the Drake Neighborhood and Drake University. The event will take
place at the historic First Christian Church, 2500 University Ave., Des Moines (plenty of free parking next to church and across the street). To reserve free childcare, contact Trish Davis at 255-3416 by Wednesday, Sept. 27.
Presenters include:
- Longtime preservationists, real estate agents, and DNA past-presidents Patty and former City of Des Moines Mayor Preston Daniels,
- Charlotte Lee of Period Construction, a restoration company based in the Drake Neighborhood with projects including returning a 3-plex rental property on Cottage Grove Avenue into a gorgeous Craftsman home that sold for more than $400,000,
- Preservationist Jennifer Irsfeld James, who has been involved in more than 10 restoration projects in the Drake Neighborhood, and
- Sherman Hill preservationists and restoration pros Hal Davis, who is a real estate agent, and York Tanzer, who is a member of the Des Moines Historic Preservation Commission.
Also at”History Pays,” the Drake Neighborhood Association will announce a
call for entries for the First Annual Drake Neighborhood Preservation
Awards, to be awarded at the Drake Neighborhood Association’s 2006 Annual
Meeting this fall.
