River Bend Attorneys Live, Work in Historic 1916 Home
Husband-and-wife legal team Jeanne Johnson and Ta-Yu Yang work and live in a home overlooking the Des Moines River at 811 Hickman Road. Their office is on the first floor, and the second floor is their residence. The house will be on the River Bend Neighborhood Home Tour, September 9-10, 2006.
Charles and Mabel Campbell built the house in 1916, when the street was originally named Prospect Road. The cost of construction was $3500. The street was renamed Hickman Road in the 1930’s. Most of the original woodwork, including the pocket doors and fireplace mantel, was removed.
Johnson and Yang bought the house in October of 2000 and moved in during the spring of 2001. The house was built in 1916 and was a single-family home until it was turned into 7 apartments, back in 1968. The owners have made extensive changes and improvements to the house and yard since 2000. On-going renovation projects include a master bedroom suite on the second floor of the addition, and landscaping of the front yard.
The home sits on a bluff near the bend in the Des Moines River, which provides recreational activities to fishermen, boaters, rowers and kayakers. There is a continuous and seasonal changing of wildlife along the river, such as eagles, beaver, wild turkeys, mink, geese, and deer.
