Anti-Litter Grant Received for Sixth Avenue

“Neithborhood Grants for Growth” has awarded a $500 grant to help fund a trash and litter clean-up project this summer along 6th Avenue in the River Bend neighborhood. Sister Donna Schmitt, CHM, was the author of the grant application and has enlisted the participation of children and adults in the three-month project.

Trash and litter will be picked up each Wednesday from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., beginning June 7 and continuing until August 30.

The grant provided enough funds for gloves, litter “grabbers,” buckets and some prizes and food at the end of the season. Private donors paid for the orange safety vests, purchased from Tru-Value at 48th and University at a greatly reduced price. The River Bend Association donated tee-shirts for each of the volunteers. McDonalds has agreed to provide cold drinks and a cool place for the volunteers to take a break mid-way through the route each Wednesday. Anawim Housing offered the use of their dumpsters and $100 toward a party for the volunteers at the end of the summer.

In addition to the benefits of cleaning up the street and improving its appearance, the project will also educate volunteers and residents on the importance and benefits of recycling.

If you would like to participate in this summer project, please contact Sister Donna at 280-3227.
